The Vikings, led by the Danish king Guthrum, are defeated by King Alfred the Great at the Battle of Edington in Wiltshire. Alfred establishes the Peace of Wedmore, in which Guthrum accepts Christianity and agrees to withdraw to the "Danelaw," England north of Watling Street from Chester to London and the Thames from London to the sea.
