The Fifth Crusade begins. French and German armies, along with Frisian sailors, travel to Acre and then on to Egypt. They capture the town of Damietta but are unable to hold their advantage and are forced to withdraw in 1221. During the Crusade, Al-Malik al- Kamil becomes sultan of Egypt.
Genghis Khan occupies Kashgar and the Tarim basin in Central Asia and makes Korea his vassal state.
