Alfonso VI is defeated by Yusuf ibn Tashfin of the Almoravids, a Berber dynasty that rules North Africa and much of Spain, with the help of the Arab princes of Spain. After the Battle of Sagrajas, carts loaded with Christian heads are sent to the major cities of Spain and North Africa to demonstrate that the enemy is suppressed.
William the Conqueror orders a census of property in the shires of England, particularly to improve tax collection. Information gathered by his commissioners is collected in the Domesday Book.
