Out in the country, the farmers of the nation were having an even more difficult time than their urban counterparts. They had been in trouble years before the stock market collapsed. During the First World War, farmers had increased production on their farms to meet the demands of the U.S. War Department and European nations. But after the war ended the farmers continued to produce the same amount despite the drop in demand. This resulted in a large surplus of goods that drove down prices. In 1920 a bushel of wheat sold for $3, but by the end of 1932 a bushel could only bring 30 cents. It often cost more to harvest crops than they could be sold for. And since many farmers had gone into debt buying additional land and new equipment, a large number of farms were lost to bank foreclosures. Many farmers were understandably angry...
