During the Depression, millions of people took to the roads looking for jobs and adventure. They hitched rides, walked along highways, and hopped on freight trains that crisscrossed the country. A large number of hoboes during the Depression were not even adults. A quarter of a million of them were teenagers and children. Many communities that had burned through their budgets trying to provide relief to the needy were forced to shut down schools as a last resort. With no jobs available or schools to attend, many children left home so they wouldn't be a burden on their family. Others saw a good opportunity to run away from an abusive homelife.
