Selim I (the Grim) becomes Sultan upon the abdication of his father, Bayezid II. He doubles Ottoman territory, moves the capital to Istanbul, brings the Arab world into the Ottoman Empire, and becomes an Islamic Caliph (or protector) of the Sunni Muslims. He rules until 1520.
