The transition from a neocolonial economy to a Socialist economy required such a tremendous amount of effort that there never seemed to be enough people to do all the work. To this end, Socialists in general strove mightily to include everyone, regardless of race or gender, in the workforce. Castro demonstrated his understanding of the necessity for race and gender equality by including AfroCubans and women in his revolutionary army. Upon taking command of Cuba, he continued to work to include minorities and women in the important work of building socialism, and he was particularly interested in helping them attain positions of leadership in the party and the government.
