The Chavin culture, unified by a common ideology or religion, flourishes in the northeastern highlands of Peru. At the site of Chavin de Huantar, a massive temple complex is constructed of dressed rectangular stone blocks and decorated with elaborately carved stone-relief sculptures. At Chongoyape perhaps the earliest gold products in America are created.
