To live in the Nile valley in ancient times was to live in a secure and isolated region, a world not dependent on or fearful of neighbors. Ancient Egyptians saw their kingdom as the center of the world and the best place on earth; their gods ruled in the heavens and their society represented the summit of human achievement. Their art and architecture developed independently, without the influence of new styles from Asia, Europe, or other parts of Africa, and their furniture, jewelry, pottery, and other craft goods remained uniquely Egyptian. From the time of their youthful apprenticeships, Egyptian artisans were instructed in the proper techniques to carry out their work, learning all the time that the Egyptian way was the right way and the best way.
