Textual References. Same sex intercourse was certainly known to the Egyptians. Chapter 125 of the Book of the Dead includes pederasty as one of the acts that can exclude a person from the land of the Blessed Dead. Yet, it is more difficult to determine the attitudes held toward sexual contact between adult men. The Tale of Neferkare and General Sasenet was a popular story composed in Dynasty 12 (circa 1938-1759 B.C.E.) It survives in fragmentary copies dating to Dynasty 18 (circa 1539-1295/1292 B.C.E.), Dynasty 20 (circa 1190-1075 B.C.E.), and Dynasty 25 (circa 760-656 B.C.E.). The fragments recount different parts of the story. The first fragment sets the story in the reign of King Neferkare, probably meaning Pepy II (circa 2288-2224/2194 B.C.E.).
