The Golden Bear.
Any discussion of professional golf in the second half of the twentieth century has to pay attention to at least five things: the four major "Grand Slam" tournaments and Jack Nicklaus. Even in his sixth decade, Nicklaus dominated the news from the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and the talk on golf courses everywhere. Though he did not win a "major" golf tournament during the 1990s, he kept things interesting and exciting in a variety of ways. He was on every all-sports all-century list (ninth athlete overall on the ESPN list, the top golfer listed) that came out. In 1998 he made the Augusta National exciting with a Sunday charge that had him only two strokes off the lead on the front nine on the final day of the tournament.
