Tennessee Roots.
Patricia Head was born 14 June 1952 in Henrietta, Tennessee, and raised in a farming family. Summitt played basketball for the University of Tennessee at Martin and earned her degree in 1974. Among her accomplishments, she played on a Pan-American Games team and helped the U.S. women's basketball team (on which she served as a co-captain) win an Olympic silver medal in 1976. Sum-mitt began her coaching career with the University of Tennessee Volunteers in 1974 as a twenty-two-year-old graduate assistant (only one year older than several of her players), who accepted the head position when the senior coach suddenly left the team. Her first team posted a 16-8 record, and she never looked back. She coached the U.S. women to their first gold medal in the 1984 Olympics. 580 AMERICAN DECADES: 1990-1999
