Comeback Kid. Lance Arm-strong was born 18 September 1971 in Piano, Texas. He started competing at an early age: he won the Iron Kids Triathlon at thirteen and became a professional cyclist at age sixteen. Raised in a single-parent family by his mom, Linda, the young Texan achieved some significant athletic milestones before the age of twenty. Even prior to his graduation from high school, Armstrong qualified to train with the U.S. Olympic developmental team. His first great cycling achievement was winning the U.S. National Amateur Championship (1991). He competed in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona as an amateur.
