In time the medical world came to recognize her treatment as an important step forward in preventing some of the terrible deformities that occurred, but her last years were still filled with bitter conflict. In 1950 she returned to Australia, saying her mission in America was completed. "Through storm and stress, frustration, false accusations and misunderstandings, I have diligently served the people of the world," she said, leaving behind clinics in Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and California. The United States acknowledged her when in 1950 Congress passed a bill giving her free entry into the United States, a privilege given only once before, to the Marquis de Lafayette.
