Although there were few reports of war sabotage on the home front during World War II, one case was so spectacular as to generate much press at tendon. On 13 and 17 June 1942 German submarines landed two specially trained groups of Nazi saboteurs on Long Island and in Florida. They intended to destroy several aluminum plants. All the saboteurs had lived in the United States before the war, were fluent in English, and knew American customs. They were nonetheless promptly arrested. The New York saboteurs, landing less than a mile from a Coast Guard station, had their Cache of explosives discovered and were caught in Manhattan within hours. They eventually revealed to the FBl the existence of the Florida team, the members of which were also arrested.
