On 16 July 1945 Life magazine crowned movie star Rita Hayworth "The Great American Love Goddess." Lovely, sexy, and slightly exotic in her looks, Hayworth found a unique place in American military history through her photographs. GIs plastered their living quarters, tanks, and aircraft With her image. She was, as Life reported, the "Oscar winner" of American pin-up girls during the war. Her-picture was even plastered on the atomic bomb that was dropped on the Bikini Islands in 1946. When asked to comment about her literal status as a bombshell, she was reported to have burst into tears of joy. "Why should I mind?" she said. "I like having my picture taken and being a glamorous person." Hayworth's fame grew throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
