By 1930 radio technology had improved to such an extent that simultaneous global broadcasting became possible. In June 1930 General Electric (GE) scientists-;beameda popular song, "I Love- You Truly,"around ,the world via shortwave pickups and rebroadcasts. "The music you are hearing has gone completely around the world,"announced WGY in Schenectady, New York. GE scientists followed that stunt with a radio bridge between a team in New York and one in-Argentina. , But the most interesting stunt broadcast by GE scientists was a transmission between Schenectady and Australia. In Schenectady they twisted a cat's tail and it howled into a microphone; in Australia a dog at a loudspeaker heard the cat, backed up, and barked into a microphone; in Schenectady the cat, hearing the dog on loudspeaker, arched its back and ruffled its fur — thus completing the world's first transoceanic dog-and-cat fight...
