Frank Nash was a wanted bank robber and prison escapee when he was tracked down in Arkansas. Agents of the Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by police officers, were escorting him back to prison at Leavenworth, Kansas, whenthree men armed with machine guns approached them outside of the Kansas City train station and opened fire. None of the special agents was armed. The deaths of four of the officers, including one of the agents, enraged the nation. The incident was followed by the news of two spectacular kidnappings for ransom and a jailbreak that involved ten prisoners, four of whom had been the objects of enormous manhunts. Nothing could have done more to convince the public that the police were unable to deal with criminals who resorted to unprovoked violence and knew no physical boundaries in their forays.
