Within two years of Dillinger's death (at the hands of waiting FBI agents) on 22 July 1934, law enforcement officials had killed "Pretty Boy" Floyd, "Baby Face" Nelson, and "Ma" Barker and her son Fred. One of the last holdouts, Alvin "Creepy" Karpis, was tracked down in New Orleans and arrested, legend has it, by J. Edgar Hoover himself. The FBI's success in these manhunts, much heralded in the movies of the day, would establish it forever as the country's premier law enforcement agency.
