Other efforts to protect schools from budget cuts were more successful than those in Chicago. Although the situation in Detroit was similar to that in Chicago, with a group of businessmen led by banker Ralph Stone pressuring the school board to cut back programs, Detroit mayor Frank Murphy and school superintendent Frank Cody successfully resisted such pressures. While paring some programs, Cody mounted a publicity campaign to get public support for the schools, and teachers and trade unions organized as an effective voting bloc, electing a school board willing to defy businessmen. In Kellogg, Idaho, teachers joined miners to throw businessmen out of important county offices.
