John L. Lewis spent the next decade climbing the ladder of the UMW and American Federation of Labor (AFL). He ascended to the presidency of the UMW in. 1920 and soon gained unchallenged control of the organization. In Lewis's first ten years as president of the UMW he dealt with plummeting wages, employment, and membership, but his personal power increased. He weathered each storm, and with the election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the coming of the New Deal in 1933, Lewis was in a position to have a major impact on the national scene.
