A German submarine torpedoes and sinks without warning the British passenger liner Lusitania, en route from New York to Liverpool, eight miles off the coast of Ireland. Nearly 1,200 of the 1,806 passengers and crew die, including 128 Americans. The Wilson administration issues a protest, demanding reparations and a pledge that such an attack will not occur again. Germany claims that the ship was carrying munitions. (It is later learned that the cargo included rifles and ammunition.) The attack deepens anti-German feelings in the United States.
