Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife are assassinated in Sarajevo by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary responds by demanding that Serbia accept an ultimatum that would severely limit its sovereignty.
