Prestigious Pedigree.
Sir Barton, a Kentucky thoroughbred, became the first Triple Crown champion when he won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes in 1919. His sire was Star Shoot, an English stallion that came to the United States to stud in 1901 when he showed signs of difficult breathing after ten successful races on English tracks. In 1912 Madden introduced Star Shoot to Lady Sterling, a seventeen-year-old mare, who bore Sir Barton the following spring.
