In 1911 Harvard College created a new entrance examination plan for candidates. If a young man's high-school record were approved by the Committee on Admission, he was required to present himself for four examinations — one in English, one in Latin (or, for students desiring the degree of S.B, either French or German), one in mathematics, and one in any of the following subjects except those previously tested: Greek, French, German, history, physics, or chemistry. Of these four examinations for applicants, the examination in English was considered especially significant: the new plan for this exam gave students three hours to complete the following tasks, and students were admonished to "write carefully: the quality of your English is even more important than your knowledge of the subject matter."
