Summary of the Decade.
During the 1900s no single team dominated, although several teams captured consecutive league pennants during two- or three-year periods. After the Brooklyn Dodgers won the National League pennant in 1900, the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed it three straight years, from 1901 to 1903. In 1909 the Pirates returned to the top of the National League as well as all of baseball by winning the World Series. After Pittsburgh, the New York Giants, led by John J. McGraw, claimed two National League titles in 1904 and 1905 and the World Series in 1905. The Chicago Cubs won three consecutive pennants from 1906 to 1908. In 1908 the Cubs became the first team to win two consecutive World Series titles. Only two American League teams won two or more consecutive pennant races during the decade.
