Frank Steunenberg Murdered.
In 1899 Idaho governor Frank Steunenberg had called for federal troops to suppress a strike by miners in Couer d'Alene. After breaking the strike, Steunenberg and the legislature worked to break the union, passing a law that forbade miners to organize unions. Though Steunenberg retired from politics, he was still a hated figure to miners and to organized labor. On the evening of 30 December 1905, as Steunenberg opened the front gate to his home in Caldwell, Idaho, a bomb exploded, killing him.
