Tootsie is a positive, uplifting, intelligent comedy from the early 1980s. Using plays on words and irony, the film gives viewers a good laugh for a couple hours. Although there are serious themes in the film, they are brought out by the comedy laced throughout the movie. Viewers never feel as if they are being lectured, but they do feel included in the humor and fun.
One of the most impressive parts of the film is the wardrobe and makeup. These departments did an excellent job, especially on Hoffman's wardrobe and makeup when he was playing Dorothy Michaels. Dustin Hoffman truly looks as if he is a woman when he plays the part of Dorothy Michaels. One amusing section occurs when Michael tries to decide which dress to wear to Julie's for their evening practice. Even though Julie does not know his true identity...
