Tootsie is the story of Michael Dorsey and his transformation to becoming a woman. Michael can't get a job as an actor because he is so hard to work for, so he decides to pretend to be a woman to get a part on a soap opera. Michael wins the part, and for months, he plays the role not only of the character in the show but also of Dorothy Michaels, the actress.
