Recordings of the Conversation
While we learn the story of The Conversation, the recordings of the conversation play a major part in the telling of the story. From the first moments when the conversation is being taped, the viewer gets wrapped up, along with Harry, in trying to figure out the meaning of the couples' words.
Harry desperately tries to figure out what is going on, playing the recording over and over to get out any ambient noise. Harry finally gets the entire conversation coming through clearly and listens to it while making love to Meredith. The next morning, Harry believes he understands the meaning of the conversation, but the tapes have been stolen.
Finally, after Harry discovers that the Director was murdered, he plays the recording through his mind a final time. Harry realizes that the couple was not talking about being killed by the Director, but rather...
