As the film begins, we see a sign saying "You are now in Bedford Falls." Then, we hear people praying for George Bailey, everyone from his friends to his mother to his brother to his children. We see that their prayers are going up to God, and Joseph and God discuss sending down someone for George. Joseph is told to send the clockmaker Clarence even if he is odd. Clarence asks whether the man is sick, but God says, "Worse. He's discouraged."
