Need for Freedom
The United States may be a free country, but not everyone has the opportunity to experience that freedom. Interestingly enough, in this film it is not the poor who miss out on their freedom but the rich. Ellie wants to be free to make her own decisions, but her father is constantly choosing for her.
Every human has a fundamental need and desire to make his or her own choices. When that freedom is taken away by governments, parents, or other people, the automatic reaction is to rebel. Ellie rebels against her father's strict expectations by running off with King Westley, a notorious gold digger who only used rich women to get their money. Her father realizes the dangers of Westley, but he does not let her make her own choices, and her automatic reaction is to rebel against him.
