It Happened One Night is a screwball comedy similar to Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. With a fast talking newspaper man and a girl with whom he has an intense love-hate relationship, we see many similarities. Unlike Russell's independent, intelligent character, however, Ellie is spoiled and naïve.
It Happened One Night combines great actors with significant commercial appeal, excellent dialogue, and perfect direction. As viewers watch the chemistry between Peter and Ellie, they can imagine similar events happening in their own lives, except for the wealthy heiress part, of course. Peter and Ellie's relationship begins with strife, the way so many strong relationships begin.
