Because this is Zach Braff's first film as director, Garden State has a feeling all of its own. Many interesting stylistic and cinematographic techniques are used to help viewers understand the nature of the film's characters. Many scenes do not seem realistic and add to the viewers' perception of the characters emotions rather than focusing only on the events at hand. The scenes in Sam's house for instance show that her home life is far from normal and help us to understand the way she looks at the world through her background.
Additionally, many scenes are shot in such a way as to open up the personality of one of the characters. In one of the first scenes we see Andrew lying in bed in a sterilized, institutional, white room. From this one scene, we are able to learn that Andrew's life is not...
