The Weather
In books and films, the weather almost takes on a personality of its own. Often it foreshadows the events that are about to happen or reflects the states of the main characters' souls. From Here to Eternity uses the weather in just this way, and it clues viewers in to the state of the characters.
One example of this in From Here to Eternity is when Warden goes to Karen's house to bring her a letter. It is raining outside, and viewers get the feeling that there's going to be trouble. Since Dana will definitely not be back for awhile, the couple starts their relationship in the middle of this storm.
The weather can also be used to achieve a sense of irony. Before the bombing, the day is sunny and bright. Everything is normal until the men suddenly hear the sound of the bombs falling on...
