Forrest Gump is a long discussion of the American Dream. Forrest finds the American Dream without even seeming to look for it. Instead, the American Dream seems to fall in his lap as he goes along. The style of the film helps to highlight the randomness of many things that happen in Forrest's life.
As the film jumps from scene to scene, Forrest and Jenny are generally the only people who remain. Because they constantly run into each other, the viewer feels that they have a destiny to be with each other even though how they get to that destiny seems to be filled with completely random events. Viewers get the sense that the director and writers are trying to show that Forrest is right: We are "floating around accidental-like," but we have a destiny too.
