Psychological Disorder
Many films have characters with psychological disorders. Like other films before it, Fight Club keeps the character's condition a secret until the end, so that the suspense and mystery of the situation increase throughout the film.
The Narrator is terribly conflicted. He lives a lonely, secluded life and finds a social life only by attending support group meetings in which he doesn't fit. He goes, though, because everyone is always accepting in the groups. When that's not enough, he creates an alternate personality whom he names Tyler Durden, his own name.
When the Narrator finally realizes that he and Tyler are one person, he is forced to deal with reality. He hates the idea that they are putting people in danger and potentially disrupting the fabric of society, so he decides to destroy Tyler.
