Floor 71/2
Floor 71/2 is symbolic of the entire ridiculousness of much of the story. Nothing in the story is at all believable when you consider it logically. From the beginning, the story is complete fantasy, but by the end of the film, the plot seems almost believable. Floor 71/2 and other odd events and people make the story seem somewhat plausible.
Floor 71/2 also gives a basis for the story in that Craig has to find the door somewhere, and he needs to learn about the vessel. By working for Dr. Lester on this floor, Craig is able to do both in a believable way.
