Summary: Hector Berlioz' background on his music and romance.
Berlioz was in an emotional turbulence with his intense romance subject- Henrietta Smithson- just prior to his composing the Symphony Fantastique. From moments of great passion towards Henrietta to moments of ridicule and abhorrence, finally by the time the symphony was nearing its completion in the year of 1830, his passion took the form of. Berlioz was convinced that Henrietta could appreciate his love for her. Around this time of estrangement from Henrietta, Berlioz also became engaged to a woman named Marie Moke. During the same year Berlioz began conceiving a new work, a symphony (that were never to materialize) named "Episode de la vie d'un artiste." Berlioz had not the best experience with the award Prix de Rome, and it seems that his doubts were chasing him during the same year in which the Fantastique was completed.
