In What Ways Is Malvolio Dark?
Summary: Malvolio is indeed the darkest character in William Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night" because he struggles with identity. He hides behind a façade of rigidness, acts in a condescending manner, and is unable to be true to himself. This inability makes him vulnerable to ridicule by other characters in the play.

Malvolio is indeed the darkest character in the play because he struggles with identity. He hides behind a façade of rigidness and acts in a condescending, authoritative way. However, we can see that he is not so strict and to the point after all when he thinks he is alone in the garden, and dreams aloud about his greatness and marrying Olivia. Malvolio also has great difficulty staying true to his puritanical faith, where he is supposed to be asexual as he falls in love with Olivia and cannot control his overwhelming emotions for her. He fears exposing his real self for fear of being rejected and he struggles...
