"Discuss the characteristics of post-modern practice with reference to three artists and their works"
Postmodernism challenges mainstream views on art, life and society. A successful artwork causes the viewer to re-evaluate the ideas of artistic practice and a masterpiece, challenges their values and worth and suggests new ways of doing things. It blurs the line between high and low art, and elevates the everyday. It seeks to explain the `what, why and how" of things, and celebrates the crumbling and pointlessness of society. For the postmodernist, art is a cluster of images and materials to be manipulated. This is done using techniques such as appropriation, borrowing, irony, parody, use of technology, text and new forms.
