"A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson" is a personal account by Mrs. Mary White Rowlandson herself, which details and describes her survival and hardship during her capture and return by the Narragansett Indians. Before she is actually taken as a detainee, Mary shows much bravery while her household is under attack. Upon witnessing the slaying of her sister, nephew and other numerous family members, Mary works up the courage to exit, with other survivors, the burning house which is surrounded by numerous Indians. She and her infant child, although both wounded, manage to survive the `Lancaster Massacre' as it is referred to and is forced on a three month long arduous trek by foot. However, little time goes by before her young child dies, and she is left with her heavy heart and faith to lead the way.
