Three Types of Hellish Punishments in "The Inferno"
Summary: In "The Inferno," Dante Aligheri assigns appropriate punishments to three types of sinners: those who commit suicide, those who are hypocrites, and those who misuse their authority as religious leaders.
This essays is analyzing three levels of hell where the punishment seems appropriate for the crime.
The Inferno, by Dante Alighieri, shows a remarkable amount of levels in hell that are very appropriate for the crime committed. Three levels that will be discussed include the violence against oneself, the simoniacs, and the hypocrites. The suicidal people are denied human form, the simoniacs are put in a mock position of a baptism and burned, and the hypocrites are weighted down by lead robes that appear to be gorgeous. All of these levels were chosen because they are most suitable for the crime committed.
The punishment for violence against oneself seems most apt. If someone was to commit suicide, then they are denied human form and turned into distorted bushes or trees that hold the soul of these wretched victims.
