Summary: Citizen Kane, considered by the American Film Institute as the best American film ever made, could have easily never been made. By giving Welles his ironclad contract, RKO Pictures set in motions a series of events that would not only change cinematic history but would also prove to be the downfall of its creator.
In 1941 one man's film contract would help create a film that would change filmmaking forever. This film would spark controversy and catapult its filmmaker into history. The film was Citizen Kane and the man was Orson Welles. Known in New York as the man who scared America, Orson Welles shot to stardom when on his CBS radio program he re-enacted H.G. Wells' War of the World. The twist was that he made it sound as though real aliens were attacking America by interrupting his program and adding a fake news story describing the attack as real. This startling stunt was pulled off so well that many Americans were telephoning loved ones to say their final farewells, as they feared for their imminent deaths.
