In 1620, the Puritans came over on the Mayflower to settle down in the New World. The main reason why Puritans came over to the New World was to escape religious persecution, but they still wanted to take part in the English Church. They also wanted to simplify and cleanse some parts of the rituals which were performed at the church (McAuley Wilson 56). Most Puritans believed that their supreme authority over human affairs was God. The church fathers were the Puritans leaders, since they believed ministers had the light of God within them. Worships that took place in the church were strictly regulated by the Bible. A good Puritan was always against scandals in any place, they also knew that corruption could easily spread out within their community.
