"Magpies": A Cultural Clash

Summary: Thomas King's short story "Magpies" examines the spiritual clash of cultures in Canada between aboriginals and European colonists. A key theme is that the natives' culture should be respected and preserved.
Through out Canadian history the First Peoples of Canada and the Canadian Government have continually been in conflict due to the signing of treaties during the colonization of Canada. From colonial expansion to the New World the European way of life and belief systems were imposed on the Aboriginals, assimilating the Aboriginal culture. Canada is considered the cultural mosaic of the world, because it allows for cultural instincts to be practiced by any culture. However, the assimilation of the Aboriginal culture does not demonstrate the cultural mosaic. Thomas King's short story "Magpies" explores the clash of cultures from the spiritual aspect. The story takes place on a Native reserve, and is told by an elder. The oral tradition is fashioned to be passed along from generation to generation, which is disappearing to white man's culture.
