Feminist Criticism of "Bluebeard"
Summary: The fairy tale "Bluebeard" is typical of literary works that describe a subjugated role of women in society. Bluebeard is analyzed from French and American approaches of feminist criticism.
Women have been negatively portrayed in many literary works as early as the days of the bible where the story of Adam and Eve was first introduced. The constant misrepresentation of women in society has always been a serious issue and has angered women ubiquitously by which they have not been able to defend themselves without the steady criticism by males. In the story Bluebeard, women are once again shown in a negative manner. This is revealed by Bluebeard's wife going against his word and opening the forbidden door. As a result of her disloyal actions she is seen as the evil character of the story even though Bluebeard killed a number of his wives. However the death of Bluebeard gives him sympathy which focuses the readers' attention onto his wife.
