Catholic Church Teaching and Sexuality
Summary: An overview of the Catholic Church's teaching on sexuality and how it is under attack by a media ethic that equate sexuality with a commodity to be bought and sold.
In valuing both sexuality and the body as divine, the Catholic Church currently has genuine concerns regarding the preservation of sexual intercourse as an enriching and life-giving act. Many people today view the teachings and moral principles of the Church as antiquated, and hence are falling victim to the manipulation of the mass media, who are making a habit of exalting sexual images and endorsing themes such as lust, greed, envy and vanity in order to sell their products. Amongst such media influence the purity and serenity of sexuality is gradually becoming lost, despite the better efforts of the Catholic Church to preserve it. Through media portrayals, the body is not being exalted in the proper ways, and as such many consequences stem from misguided moral decisions, causing both emotional and physical damage.
