Morality and Virtual Reality
Summary: As the capabilities of virtual reality progress to the point that virtual worlds are indistinguishable from the real world, some very interesting questions will arise. Chiefly among them is the question of morality in virtual worlds and whether it even exists there. Can something that never physically happened be considered immoral? To put it quite simply, it can.
Towards the end of the twentieth century, mankind had started to master the new technology of Virtual Reality. The premise behind it was simple enough - use computers to simulate an actual environment that can be interacted with by a person. To its creators the applications of Virtual Reality seemed almost endless as it could be used to entertain the public with new video games or even train army recruits by placing them on a virtual battlefield. As time progresses, so will the capabilities of Virtual Reality until, eventually, the virtual worlds are indistinguishable from the real one. To some extent this has already occurred. Many computer games today allow a person to exercise complete free will in a virtual environment, doing what they went, when they want.
