Summary: There has been, in poetry, transition from the Romantic, through the Realist, all the way to the Symbolistmovements. From the Romantic writers to the Symbolists, it was always the masses of the people that dictated exactly where the next literary shift was moving. The readers can and do control what the writers produce. Also, the times in which the writer may be writing can all have a humongous impact on the flow of the ages.
Prime Poetry Periodicals

The Romantic Movement in European culture began in the early nineteenth century and progressed all the way from Realism to Symbolism into the begging of the 20th century. While all three of these poetic styles of writing are similar to a small degree, they differ quite a lot more. The Romantics focused heavily on the open expression of human emotions through a non-complex, literal language structure. On the other hand, the Symbolists developed a kind of concealed perspective using exact and impressionistic imagery in their compositions. The Realist writers found a golden mean, per say, in which they could still be overly sentimental yet, very gritty and straight to the point.
